形态描述：多年生粗壮草本或亚灌木状, 高 1-2 m 。茎直立, 直径1-1.5(～2)cm , 通常无分枝, 具纵棱及沟纹, 被黄褐色短柔毛及节状柔毛, 节间长5-15 cm 。下部叶长圆形或倒披针状长圆形, 长30-35 cm , 宽10-12 cm , 先端急尖, 基部渐狭而下延, 边缘具不规则而粗细相间的锯齿, 两粗齿间具2～3 个细齿, 上面密被短糙毛及糙点, 有时疏被节状柔毛, 背面密被淡黄色短柔毛及节状长柔毛, 有时具腺毛, 侧脉16-22 对, 与主脉上面明显, 背面隆起, 中部叶长圆形或长圆状披针形, 长30-40cm , 宽12-16 cm , 先端急尖或钝, 基部渐狭而下延, 边缘有不规则粗细相间的重锯齿, 上部叶窄小,线形或线状披针形, 背面密被淡黄色短柔毛及节状长柔毛。头状花序极多数, 密集, 直径4-7mm , 花序无柄或具5-7 mm 的短柄, 花序柄密被淡黄色短柔毛及节状长柔毛, 排成大型圆锥花序。总苞近钟形, 长5-7 mm ;总苞片4(～5)层, 草质或干膜质, 外层线状披针形, 长2-3 mm , 先端渐尖, 外面被短柔毛, 中层与内层近相似, 线形, 长4-7 mm , 先端淅尖, 外面被柔毛。花托平或稍凸起, 直径2-3 mm 。花先黄色, 后变红色, 雌花多数, 细管状, 长约4 mm , 先端(4-)5 齿裂, 裂片无毛;两性花花冠管状, 长5-6 mm , 往上逐渐扩大, 先端5 裂, 裂片三角形, 外面被疏短柔毛。冠毛白色, 糙毛状, 长4-5 mm 。瘦果圆柱形或长圆状圆柱形, 长约1 mm , 具纵沟槽。花期2-3 月;果期3-4 月。
